About Provident – An Unum Group Company
Unum and Provident merged in 1999 to form UnumProvident Corporation. In 2007, the business changed its name to Unum Group. Unum Group is a global insurance provider of disability and life insurance products that generated nearly $12 billion in revenue and $1.1 billion in net income in 2019. The company’s portfolio includes individual disability, group short-term disability, group long-term disability, long-term care insurance, and life insurance policies. Within this organization lies the Provident lines of insurance, which include the Provident Life and Accident Insurance Company brand.
Unum Group controls various insurance policies from Provident and other insurer that have put policyholders in a bind. If you previously purchased a policy from Provident Life and Accident Insurance Company, UnumProvident Insurance Company, The Paul Revere Life Insurance Company, or Colonial Life & Accident Insurance Company, you may receive a letter denying your legitimate claims from the Unum Group.
You may have seen Unum Group’s television commercials imploring you to purchase a policy from them. Given Unum Group’s annual revenues and net income, the organization can act in good faith toward Provident policyholders and pay valid claims. Yet, the company fails to do so time and time again. If you suspect that Provident Life or Unum has been intentionally delaying or has improperly denied your long-term or short-term disability insurance claim, call the Donahue & Horrow legal team today: (877) 664-5407. We’re available to answer any questions you may have about your insurance policy or denied insurance claim.
Donahue & Horrow is based in Los Angeles, but we routinely handle cases throughout California, including in the Bay Area, the South Bay and Central California. Call us at 877-664-5407. The Unum Group’s Tactics to Deny Provident Disability Insurance Claims
It’s not surprising that Unum Group has denied Provident policyholders’ insurance claims. The organization has been the target of various class-action lawsuits over the years and countless lawsuits from individual policyholders like you. Insurance companies of this size often follow similar methods to deny policyholders’ valid insurance claims by:
- Denying an insurance claim after ignoring the insured’s statements about their actual, everyday occupational demands;
- Using biased physician reviews to wrongfully deny or terminate disability insurance benefit claims; and
- Not adequately advising oreducating customers about the appeal process after an insurance claim denial.
If you’re a Provident policyholder and intimidated by taking on Unum Group, you don’t have to do it alone. These large insurance businesses often resort to “wear down” policyholders like you in the hopes that you will give up rather than fight for your benefits. If Unum has tried one or more of these tactics on you, it might be a clear sign the business is trying to fraudulently deny your Provident insurance claim:
- Repeatedly making burdensome requests for more and more documentation, which often duplicates documentation already you already submitted;
- Downplaying medical evidence – including objective and subjective records- that supports the disability or entitlement to insurance benefits;
- Resorting to requesting so-called “independent” medical reviews by unqualified physicians or individuals; or
- Lengthy delays in making a decision on a disability insurance claim.
Real Examples of Provident Insurance Claim Denials
Unum Group and Provident have a long history of denying policyholders’ claims. In the 1990s and early 2000s, the UnumProvident Corporation allegedly denied or even terminated thousands of claims, leading to a class-action lawsuit against the company for violating Employee Retirement Income Securities Act (ERISA) mandates. In late-2002, a judge ordered the company to stop withholding information from policyholders and using biased medical examiners to deny policyholders’ claims.
In 2005, the U.S. Department of Labor concluded an investigation into Unum Group for “bad faith” practices relating to the insurer’s claims denials. As a result of this inquiry, Unum was forced to review hundreds of thousands of past claims, pay a significant fine, and update its claims processes to protect policyholders.
Unfortunately for customers, Unum Group and its various entities didn’t change course. In 2016, Unum settled a $46 million class-action lawsuit brought by a U.S. District Court in the Central District of California. Unum’s bad faith practices in this case included overcharging policyholders’ long-term care benefits.
